Some new leathers, especially less expensive brands, need to be softened both to look better and be more comfortable. Rub the garment with olive oil. This is especially important with leather pants which tend to “creak”.
Make Suede Last Forever!
- Remove salt as soon as possible and treat with vinegar.
- Allow wet suede to dry, and then raise the nap with a closely tufted pet brush.
- Gently blow dry.
Shoe Care
Get your shoes resoled with a rubber bottom and taps. It is will strengthen impact points. Have your cobbler apply heel shields. They’re under five dollars and will protect your heels from scrapes and marks. Change the shoes you wear from day to day to give them a chance to bounce back. This also lessens the chance our feet will develop corns and calluses in a particular spot.
Tip
Don’t place wet shoes near heat unless you need to shrink them.
Patent Leather
Make your patent leather shiny and new by cleaning it with window cleaner and buff with a soft cloth.
Non-Leather
Clean with any all purpose spray. Be sure the cleaner does not contain bleach.
Boots
Keep leather and suede boots from wrinkling by putting an empty egg carton in each leg. Stuff crumpled newspapers into boots that need reshaping. The trick is to crumple the newspaper into very small pieces and using as much as you can possibly fit into the boot.
