There are new and inventive breakthroughs in appearance improvements that are both exciting and cautionary. Although I have outlined the latest techniques as well as their benefits and risks, it is important to be an informed consumer.
Permanent Lip Plumping
Lips thin out and droop as we age. There are now long term and permanent breakthroughs to consider.
-
Restylane
A hyaluronic acid, and a sugar based gel found naturally in rooster combs. It’s given by injection to define and to add volume. It’s used to raise drooping corners of the mouth, which turn down during the aging process. Results: 6 to 12 months. Cost: $500 to $600
Possible Complications: temporary lumps and redness
- Hylaform

Similar to Restylane, also a hyaluronic acid, it is injected into the lip area to restore volume. Results: 3 to 6 months Cost: $400 to $500
Possible Complications: Redness
- Fat Injections
Fat is removed from abdomen or hip through light liposuction and injected into the lips. Results: Several months to permanent depending on body’s reaction Cost: $1,000 to $1,200
Possible Complications: Temporary lumpiness and redness
-
Porcelain Veneers
Cosmetic veneers, used to give small or irregular teeth better shape and size can also plump out the appearance of lips. It’s a two for one procedure and used by many insiders. Not only do your teeth look better, but your lips will look fuller without any needles! Results: Permanent

New Uses for Botox
Botox has emerged from just paralyzing wrinkles or releasing frown lines to treating almost every part of the body. Make certain that the procedure you are interested in has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
-
Lift a Droopy Nose
The right amount of Botox can give a subtle lift to a droopy nasal tip.
-
Stop Excess Perspiration
Botox has been used successfully to treat the palms of the hands, armpits, and feet. A few doctors are also experimenting with Botox to treat excessively oily scalps.
-
Fix a Gummy Smile
The muscle actions for smiling can sometimes elevate too much, causing too much gum to be shown. Botox can reduce the elevation action of your mouth and eliminate this problem.
-
TMJ Relief
Some doctors have begun using Botox in relieving TMJ stress and other symptoms related to TMJ.
-
Relax Neck Bands
When muscles are overly tight in the neck it can cause a severe look. Relaxing those muscles with Botox can smooth them out and give off a more youthful appearance.
-
Lift Mouth Corners
Muscles around the mouth can pull down, causing a frowning appearance. Botox can relax these muscles, resulting in a natural looking neutral position.

Non Surgical Wrinkle Removers
- Thermage
This procedure uses radio frequency technology to stimulate collagen production which results in tighter skin and fewer wrinkles. Each session takes about an hour. Although FDA approved (since 2003) there have been some cases of burning. Done properly, this procedure leaves skin with a smooth glow, tightens brows, neck, and jaw line.
Thermage is for sagging due to loss of skin tone, rather than for removing excess fat. It does not treat fat pockets. Most Thermage procedures are done in 3 to 6 sessions. Cost: $3,000 to $6,000.
Called Fraxel SR or Fractional Skin Resurfacing, this treatment removes the upper layers of skin. Another technology that is even newer than Fraxel SR is Lux IR. It combines the resurfacing technology of Fraxel SR with the tightening effects of Thermage. You’ll need 2 to 3 sessions. Cost: $1,000 to $2,000
