There are so many products to choose from, so many brands, so many promises. You must be confused. The first thing you need to consider when you shop for skin products is… your skin problem. And remember! What works for your best friend so wonderfully might not work for you. I’ll give you some “over the counter” solutions and home remedies for every skin type.
You must know that the fewer active ingredients you find in a skin product, the less opportunity for your skin to be thrown off balance. The less preservatives contained in a product will mean that there is less risk of irritation. Check expiration dates on all labels. The longer the date of expiration generally means that that there are more preservatives to stabilize the product.
Dull Flaky Skin
- Over the Counter
Look for an exfoliant containing micro beads of vitamin C. Check to see if the product contains a face peeling acid.
- Home Remedy
-Mix a quarter cup orange juice with 1 teaspoon of water.
-Apply evenly all over the face, and allow to set for a minute or two.
-Rinse with tepid water.
-The vitamin C in orange juice will help repair skin cells and naturally exfoliate flakes and dryness.
Skin Discoloration
Look for a hydroquinone product. It’s usually called “Out Spot” or “Fading Cream”. It should contain 2% hydroquinone, the highest percentage allowed to be sold without prescription. Anything less will not be effective or worth your effort.
- Laser Therapy
If you have very deep skin discoloration, you may consider spending the extra money and time to have the deepest spots zapped.
- Home Remedy
With a soft toothbrush rub a mixture of baking soda mixed with just enough fresh lemon juice to create a soft paste into the skin. Allow it to set for one minute. Rinse off with warm water.
Erase Fine Lines
- Home Remedy
Caffeine is the hot ingredient in the priciest of skin care. Save money and get a more powerful product by taking a minute or two to reach for your own cooled Java. Apply the cooled coffee (the stronger the better) to the lines. Caffeine firms skin and plumps wrinkles. Coffee also strengthens skin against free radicals, and even reduces skin cancer risk.
Treat Unsightly Acne
- Over the counter
Look for Salicylic Acid treatments. These will unclog pores and clean them out.

Home Remedies
Rub tomato pulp all over your face. Leave it on for about 20 minutes. Rinse thoroughly. Hold an ice cube on the pimple to bring down the swelling.
Apply tea tree oil with a cotton swab and hold for 60 seconds. Tea tree oil contains anti-viral properties that zap blemish causing bacteria on contact. Conceal the redness with an eye redness remover. Add green eye shadow to your concealer or foundation to neutralize the redness. Blend in and then apply foundation.
