Applying self tanner so that it looks natural takes time and practice. Start by washing skin with a creamy cleanser and shave wherever you are planning to apply tanner. Exfoliate skin with a soft scrub. Pay attention to rough areas on feet, knees, and elbows. Rinse and dry thoroughly before applying tanner.
Professional Application Techniques
- Apply moisturizer to elbows, knees, and feet before applying tanner. Don’t shave legs for several hours before applying sunless tanners.
- Rub a thin layer of petroleum jelly around your nails, and between your fingers and toes to protect that area of the skin.
- If using a spray hold the nozzle approximately six inches from the skin. Spray from the feet up in small circles.
- Don’t apply tanner to tops of feet, elbows, or knees.
- When you are using lotion, work a quarter size dollop from feet to neck in horizontal and then vertical strokes.
- If using foam, work a palm sized amount of the foam in circular strokes starting at feet.
- Use the residue of product that remains on the palms of your hands to elbows, knees, and feet. You only need a small amount for these areas since they absorb color more readily.
- Don’t wear deodorant, perfume, makeup or jewelry until the tan is finished developing. Moisturize twice daily for a longer lasting and richer tan.

Important
To avoid streaks, look for the ingredient erythrulose in self tanners. Wait 20 to 30 minutes before getting dressed. This is a good time to lift weights, do a pedicure, or meditate
