Hair is over 90 per cent protein, and when that protein is broken down by the elements, it leads to damage. Coconut oil is the best remedy. It was found in a recent issue of the Journal of Cosmetic Science to be far superior to mineral and sunflower oil. They cannot penetrate the hair shaft and bond like coconut oil.
Coloring secrets
- Wet the ends of your hair with warm water before you color. The ends of your hair are more porous so this is the way to prevent uneven coloring. Wet hair won’t absorb hair color as dry hair will.
- Don’t color freshly washed hair. Your hair’s natural oils will help your color to adhere better. Let your hair rest for at least a day or two before coloring. Make sure you don’t have any product in your hair which could result in uneven coloring.
- Use a deep conditioning treatment a few days before coloring. The strands will be less porous and will absorb dye better.
- If you are buying kits and your hair is very thick or longer than shoulder length you need to purchase two kits.
- Rub a cotton ball soaked in Sea Breeze along the hair line or anywhere else color needs to be removed.
Preserve Your Color
- To prevent your hair from discoloring, rinse your hair with warm water before swimming. Hair that is wet won’t be able to absorb chlorinated water.
- Moisturize your hair if you’re going to be out in the sun and can’t wear a hat.
- Pat your colored hair, don’t rub it when you towel dry. Vigorous towel drying damages your hair’s delicate cuticle, making it look dull and prone to breaking.
- Treat your colored hair with a deep conditioner at least once a week since colored hair tends to be dry.
Getting Back to Your Natural Color
There’s more to getting back to the color you were born with than just letting it grow out. You may not remember what your natural color is anymore. The best way to match back to nature is to pull your hair back to expose the roots. Choose coloring that is close to that color. If you can wait and switch gradually by having your stylist blend in low lights then this may be the st way to go. It will probably take only three appointments.

Shine Enhancer
Chamomile tea gives shine to the hair and takes away brassiness. Brew 2 teabags in a cup of boiling water. Allow to cool and use as a final rinse.
Treat Extremely Damaged Hair
When hair is severely damaged, it is necessary to use a treatment before shampooing. A hot oil treatment will be most successful. Use extra virgin olive oil warmed in the microwave.
Fight Dandruff
Use tea tree oil to get rid of dandruff. It’s a natural and inexpensive solution that not only cures dandruff but alleviates an itchy scalp. Apply a few drops to the scalp before shampooing. Massage in it in for a few minutes and then shampoo and condition.
Fight Hair Static
Use Static Guard on your hair when you absolutely do not want frizzies. A very small amount is advised, so the best way to apply it is to spray a small amount in the palm of your hand, rub palms together, and then pat lightly over the hair shaft. Stiff bristles can make hair more static. Soften bristles (especially round brush bristles) with 4 from your blow dryer first.
Shine On!
If you color your hair you can maintain the shine of the processed color by using color-protective products. Loss of shine can also be caused by product build up. Too much heat caused by over styling (flat ironing, blow drying at high heat, etc.) can also cause hair to become dull.
- Don’t over process your hair. Color only when absolutely necessary.
- Use low heat when styling your hair.
- Read the ingredient label and try to avoid products that contain alcohol.
- Spritz your hair with a protective product before blow drying.
- Use a hot oil treatment at least once a week to add healthy shine.
